AJ Newell
AJ Newell is a metalsmith, enamellist, and metal clay artist known for her sculptural approach to jewelry and love of experimentation. With a background in design (BFA, Virginia Commonwealth University) and marketing (MS, West Virginia University), she spent 20 years as a Creative Director before immersing herself in metal arts. Her work ranges from whimsical miniatures—like a tiny strawberry that’s actually a house—to expressive character pieces and explorations in anticlastic forming. She frequently incorporates 24K gold using the Keum-Boo technique and applies bold patinas to create striking contrasts.
Newell’s work has earned awards, including first place in the 2021 Metal Clay Expressions exhibit and third place in 2023. She presents on metal clay, metalsmithing, and enameling techniques and teaches online and in-person workshops. In 2025, she will be teaching at Metal Clay Live and the Metal Clay Artist Symposium. She shares her work at www.ajnewellstudio.com and on social media.
